About the Coffee
Coffee is a major industry for PNG, involving more than 2.5 million people (or nearly half of the total population). Kunjin coffee is produced at the centralised Kindeng platation mill in the Kindeng region of the Western Highlands. The mill sources coffee cherries from smallholder farmers who cultivate approximately 2,500 trees per hectare on about 1.5 hectares of land each, while coffee processing occurs at a leased vintage wet mill of the John Gordon brand within an old colonial plantation in PNG. Owning property in the region is seen as risky due to the time it takes to establish trust with local tribes and the ongoing threat of losing assets.
